Reels for Sale

My reels have been fully rebuilt, and optimized for function. I support them with parts and adjustments if ever needed.
The standard 3-day inspection policy of Clark's board applies, and I have been known to take trade-ins after 6 months and longer.
The tuning I do makes my reels function better than they did when new.
Young reels that I have designated as LHW (left-hand wind), I do so because it's an accomplishment.
With every postwar Young reel I rebuild and tune, I go through a stack of new pawls to find the one that works best for this reel.
If you need a RHW reel, by all means let me know, because I can always "put them back" (or may have another reel in the wings for you).
If interested, please contact me through the yuku pm (message button to the left)
Before you click on that $85 ebay deal, consider the effort and cost to bring it up to the condition of one of these reels. Each one has in it several hours of my experienced labor.
My prices include the insured shipping (within US).
I accept payment by paypal or money order.
Thanks for looking.

3" Prewar Young Pattern 1a - RHW

A great little prewar reel with excellent remaining Japanned enamel finish, marked for Geo. Wilkins & Son, Redditch, and dates to the mid-30s.
I have rebuilt it and and converted it to LHW by reshaping and re-tempering the pawl spring.
It is perfectly solid with no spindle/bushing wear, a good original thrust washer and a perfect ernoid handle.
Perfect function in RHW with a nice usable check.
Capacity is a DT3 to WF5 with usable backing. Weight is about 5 ounces, perfect to balance 6' to 7-1/2' cane or glass.
The reel has the short 2-3/8" foot and should fit applications except the most modern sliding bands.
I am offering the reel as shown for $95 shipped, insured (within US - I can quote international shipping)

3-1/4" Ogden Smiths Exchequer - Early Dingley Perfect - RHW

Another reel I never expected to sell. This one came back because a small tight crack was found in the frame, which I had never noticed, and I lowered the price. A really wonderful reel, and it has has caught many fish. It dates to c.1925.
A perfect reel mechanically and cosmetically it has a good remaining lead finish. Single adjustable check, collared thrust bearing and D-stamp. The photos show it lubed with Daiwa blue, but it's been cleaned many times and is lubed with red Hot Sauce.
The handle is perfect - smooth as a baby.
It weighs about 7-1/2 ounces, and balances 8-1/2' to 9' cane.
Capacity is DT5 or WF7 with 50yds backing.
The 2-1/2" original brass foot will fit almost anything, great with postwar pocketed seats, and with the Granger patented seat .
Included is a custom-made block leather case from Ly Erg Angling Accessories in the UK, marked for WH Dingley Maker, Alnwick.
Tough to part with, and I'm asking $350 shipped insured (within US - I can quote international shipping)

Martin 67A - Near Mint, Reversible

A venerable American-made classic.
I've fished this reel a bit, and it was mint-in-box when I purchased it.
It has the reversible and delightful Martin helical-spring click-pawl.
Capacity is quite large, DT6 with a bit of backing, and 120yds or so with a WF6.
A fantastic reel for venerable glass and is right at home on 7' to 8' rods.
If you have been looking for one of these, this is as nice as you are likely to find.
With box and papers.
Asking $65 shipped, insured (within US - I can quote international shipping)

This is my c.1937-9 Ogden Smiths Exchequer.
(The rod is my 8' 3/2 DR Stone FE Thomas light special.)
The reel is probably the nicest example in the world and I should be ashamed for planning to fish it. It had never been lined until I did it last week. I have other reels for this rod as well, including a very fine 3" Dingley and 3" Young perfect, so I may not fish it "much".

I've had the reel in my collection for a couple of years now but couldn't get it apart. Oil that I had put on the bearings finally wetted between the spindle, the the reel glided apart when I tried it last week. The spool is supported by two Hoffmann aircraft control system ball bearings separated by a brass spacer. There was really nothing internally to clean, but I lubed for safe fishing, reassembled and lined it.

I've researched this reel in just about as much detail as I can from this side of the pond. Low end is "pinned" by JW Young sliding agate patent, 1937. Top end is pinned by the War - 1940.
here's the catalog page, which is not dated, but must fit the same date range.

It's the 90s flyreel from 1939. Palming rim, variable disc drag, spool riding on two precision ball bearings. The click-pawl can be disengaged for free-spooling or silent drag. While it doesn't exactly have a clutch, tightening the centrebrake with the click-pawl engaged still maintains a good differential between wind and pay. The foot is solid nickel., which became an OS trademark sometime between the wars.

I've even researched the Hoffmann bearings. Knowing that JW Young was building the firing trigger mechanism for Hurricane and, later, Spitfire fighters, I've wondered if this reel was designed to mask the boxes of aircraft control system ball bearings turning up at the Mayfield Works.

Ron - I enjoy visiting your site from time to time...it's fun and refreshing. It was your posting of Dingley reels that brought me to the Forum (from"the Google") for the first time. Thank you! I hope you are still working on that Young book. Rupe's book is very enjoyable but I'm sure you will give the Young fly reels the in-depth coverage they deserve. Best regards, Bro!

    Hi Ron,

I'm new to this crowd. Arrived here by googling J.W.Young reels. Your pictures and knowledge about them is fantastic. I have a few myself. A couple are in good shape and a couple could use some TLC. My passion is salmon fishing, most of which I have done with Young reels. I love the Landex. When working well it is an awesome reel, but I have had some adventures with them.

    Just making contact.

    Ron,

Received the 3" Flymaster Junior today and I couldn't be more pleased. The condition, the details, and the very cool olive/brown color are amazing, and you tuned it to a fair-thee-well. Thanks also for returning it to RHW for this Leftie.

A very fair deal and I can't wait to line it up and give it a workout,

    Kev/middlemac
